The time has come, it’s really here… I can finally share our cotton candy kids room for two! Im calling it the cotton candy room because it is filled with delicious pastels that make me immediately think of Summer nights, beach days and cotton candy sweetness.
This shared space used to be the Master bedroom, but instead of squeezing our two kiddos into the little space of Finn’s current room, we decided to give them the master. We do our living downstairs, but Finnegan uses his bedroom as a play space. Sharing it with baby sister was going to cut that already petite play space in half. Now he has a serious play zone for his imagination to run wild and soon, Tallula’s imagination too.
Before we could give our sweet babes a cotton candy kids room we had to do a lot of work. I mean A LOT of work. Let me break it down… Remove a closet, remove carpet, insulate, dry wall, texture, remove popcorn ceilings, strip and sand a beam, install Garrison hardwood floors, install baseboards and trim then paint, paint and paint some more. The space looks zero percent like it did before and as you can see below… that’s a good thing! Other than the flooring install and baseboards my husband did ALL THE THINGS. All of them. All while working his Fire Captain schedule and using his “days off” to make this happen in under 4 weeks. I am certain that I married Superman and our kids have an actual superhero for a Daddy. I have no clue what I did right in my life to end up with a man like mine; but I’m never letting go.
That was an opening looking onto the living room… weird!
Now that you see where we came from, lets get back to the pretty…
The room is anchored by these incredible hardwood floors by Garrison. The floors I used in the kids space are from the Newport collection and are the Pebble Beach finish. They’re STUNNING. I repeat, STUNNING. We have Garrison flooring downstairs as well, and I am a believer. A Garrison girl all day. They provide the perfect backdrop for the room. They’re full of character and totally warm without being rustic and they make me swoon. They’re the single most impactful change to the space. I mean every single thing is important to creating the overall space; but remove these Garrison floors from the equation and everything else loses some sparkle.
Next was finding the PERFECT beds for my babes. I wanted charm and sweetness without being too baby or too grown up. I wanted their beds to match but still somehow feel appropriate for a baby girl and big boy. Enter Incy with these incredible pieces; the Oscar twin bed and the Sophia crib. I first fell in love with Incy just because their store name is the cutest dang thing I have ever heard in my life. Then I saw their bedding options and I knew the search was over. Perfection. These beds are everything I hoped for. They are so well built and oh so beautiful.
Their beds are topped with Brentwood Home mattresses. The Juniper memory foam Brentwood Home mattress for Finnegan, (I got my first memory foam mattress at 28 years old, so why not 5 for him right, seems fair) and an amazing Wildfern stage 2 crib mattress for Lula. The Wildfern mattress is filled with organic coconut husk and is waterproof, a must. It is a stage 2 mattress because it has a softer side for toddler aged kiddos and a firm side for the infant stage, so it grows with them. It is amazing.
Once I found the beds and the mattresses, I had to decide on a color palette. Finn wanted all pink everything because pink is his favorite color; he’s the coolest little dude. Anyway, I originally thought I’d go muted blush, woods and grey for the palette, so it didn’t feel too girly. Then I realized there wasn’t enough whimsy in that palette for me. It felt too mature and I wanted playful. Then I found the Minted art. Oh the amazing Minted art. The piece that started it all is the Route 66 piece above Finn’s bed. Finnegan fell in love with that piece and a color palette was born. Every single piece of art in this room is by Minted and its all so much fun. Im obsessed with each and every piece of art, Minted has a selection like none other and working with them was a dream.
Once the palette was picked I knew immediately that I needed to break up the toothache inducing whimsy of cotton candy colors with a few more neutral pieces. Which is why our black and cream Tiger rug by Nordic Knots and black and cream round ABC rug by Lorena Canal Rugs were the perfect fit. They have the neutral colors I needed to break up the pastels but is still bold and playful. A perfect base. I adore these rugs. Perfect for layering and both rugs are totally natural. Which means no synthetics rubbing on those chubby and delicate baby cheeks during tummy time. Major bonus of the Lorena Canal Rugs is that they’re machine washable!!! Yes, machine washable… shut up.
Then of course I had to incorporate some Article into the space because I am obsessed with everything Article does. We decided to move the Burrard sofa into the kids room so the grown ups would have a comfy spot to hang while the littles play. Or lets be real, we have a comfy place to pass out on Tallula’s restless nights lol. But aside from the sofa, when I saw Article made the Embrace rocking chair I literally starting dancing. It is such a stunner and it’s beautiful lines made me drool. But better than pretty, its so dang cozy. My Mom, who is a Mother of 6 and rocking chair connoisseur, gives this Rockstar 2 thumbs up. She rocked out when she came to visit a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it.
The rest of the space is filled with delicious textiles; blankets and pillows from a few unbelievable vendors. The couch is basically nothing but Zig Zag Design Studio pillows and I am truly mad about them. They are cotton candy scrumptiousness. They’re a combo of grown up pillows with their modern lines and cool vibe but still perfectly playful because of the palette Monika created. A more perfect pillow combo for this sofa does not exist. The beds are styled with a combo of pillows from HomeGoods and Target but each bed zone has one extra special pillow. Tallula gets a hot pink silk pillow by My Haven Home in her crib and Finnegan has a grey and cream fringe beauty from Kaekoo shop at the foot of his bed. The Kaekoo shop pillow actually hops around the room because I’m crazy about it and can’t decide on a permanent spot. The show stopping knit blankets on Finn’s bed and on the sofa are handmade by the talented Sarah Lou Co and the gorgeous floral baby blanket on the rocker is by Baby Love Quilts.
The room wouldn’t have been complete without a pouf… or 3. I mean I am their Mama after all. The Zig Zag Design Studio ottoman sits at the foot of Finns bed, and he currently uses as a seat at story time. A custom knit teal blue pouf from BeCozi is being used as a Mommy footrest when Im in the rocking chair. And a pink leather Moroccan pouf from My Haven Home is used as footrest for the sofa. To be completely honest, the pink pouf has become the dogs pouf. It’s their favorite spot in the house. When the sun shines through the big windows the pink pouf gets bathed in light and the dogs will not be moved. Poufs for everyone!!
I have had such a blast creating this space for our kiddos and am so happy with the end result. I hope you all love how it turned out too!!
This space is a cotton candy room for two dream come true! It’s by far the coolest room in the house and when I am in there my heart swells. The space could not have been possible without the amazing companies who helped bring the room to life. Below you can shop the look and I assure you, you will not be disappointed if you take the time to check out each and every one of these shops!!
