We live in an older home and most of the rooms do not have overhead lighting. This makes choosing the right lighting crucial for function, in addition to it simply being beautiful.

We’re Erin & Matt

I am not normally a shiplap fan but we added shiplap to the ceiling in our stairwell, along with wrapping our beam in wood and hanging a gorgeous pendant from Hudson Valley Lighting and, I am here for it! The pendant is the catalyst to this makeover. We have a huge window in our stairwell and we wanted to make a bold statement with the lighting without hiding the view. The Ivy Pendant by Becki Owens from Hudson Vally Lighting does just that.

In this stairwell we added 6.5″ inch wide nickel gap shiplap pre-primed pine planks to the ceiling and painted them in the same color as the walls, Swiss Coffee by Behr.

Then we wrapped the drywall ceiling beam in pine common board, utilizing 45 degree angle miter cuts to make the edges line up nice and tight to help the illusion it is solid wood. We distressed the planks before sanding and then staining first with Early American followed by Weathered Oak both by Minwax.

Next we updated the handrails of our stairs. We installed these new rails last Summer but never finished out the raw oak handrails until now. We went black using Premium Ebony stain by Varathane and then sealed it with a clear polyurethane finish. Obsessed.

All of these edits to the stairwell made an enormous impact and created the perfect backdrop to the new pendant. It is the star of the show and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Shop the pendant HERE. It comes more finishes and sizes, there is sconce version and it is SO good.
